Along with the usage of self-drilling rock reinforcement systems, various technical
advantages can be achieved. The adjacent list gives an overview of the main
advantages, which can be pointed out. Some of these topics have already been
covered in this document; others will be discussed in detail in the following:
− Application of standard rock drilling equipment − Increase in occupational safety
− Minimization of installation times due to the reduction of operational steps, allowing improved excavation cycle times
− Assured installation in case of unstable boreholes − Possible reduction of additional settlements caused by the installation procedure
− Optional immediate load-bearing capacity after installation
− Supreme drilling accuracy
Self-drilling rock reinforcement systems are a prerequisite for state-of-the-art underground excavation. Main features of these systems are their one-step operational procedure by means of simultaneous drilling and installation. The beforesummarized technical features highlight the main advantages of self-drilling systems in comparison to conventional ground support. In addition, the usage of self-drilling systems is essential in case of weak ground conditions, where the stability of the borehole wall is not warranted. There, installing a conventional two-step system becomes rather impossible. Future developments may focus on the following topics:
− Self-drilling combination bolts, which are able to provide an immediate anchorage and can be injected afterwards
− Successful implementation of a self-drilling mechanical anchor system
− Introduction of automated or semi-automated drill units which allow an increase in safety as well as installation efficiency
− Adaptation of the self-drilling installation technique to other conventional rock reinforcement and ground control systems.
